Vamizi Island Lodge is located close to the water s edge on northern side of Vamizi Island off the coast of northern Mozambique in the Quirimbas Archipelago

It s been designed to complement the environment and to cause as little damage to it as possible The construction uses almost entirely local materials and the d cor incorporates as much of the traditional design of the region as possible Timber thatch and stone all come from the mainland or the islands themselves thus providing help to the local economy

Vamizi is blessed with turtles beaches scuba diving and fishing and is an ideal romantic honeymoons destination as well as being perfect as an add on to your African safari The beach houses are on an 8 km long stretch of white sandy beach that can only be called perfection

Accommodation

This spectacular twenty four-bed lodge looks towards Rongui from the end of a long powder-sand beach The lodge comprises ten separate beach houses each with its own large living room spectacular bathroom and breezy veranda Two of these houses can accommodate four guests while the rest take two The houses are all secluded from each other and look out to sea from the shade of the forest that forms the centre of the island Samango monkeys play in the trees and prowl the glades hunting the land crabs that live there

The d cor of the Vamizi Island Lodge incorporates as much of the traditional design of the region as possible The roofs of the lodge are makuti palm thatch based on the Mozambican style and the emphasis is on space and openness so the rooms are large with high ceilings The bathrooms have a solid slab of marble forming the wall of the shower and hand-carved screens which provide the privacy and aesthetic detail of a Zanzibar palace The bedrooms have king-size beds four-posters with free-standing frames draped in beautiful natural muslin mosquito nets The burnt orange curtains are a fine muslin fabric which billows softly in the wind and complements the indigo and natural colours in the room

Dining

Stretched along the beach the main dining room bar and sitting room have all been created with open sitting areas and secluded corners A sunset bar is located close to the water s edge The ocean holds the key to Vamizi s main larder the cuisine will reflect this by using the freshest local ingredients with Mediterranean and Indian Ocean flavours The wine list is in part sourced from a French vineyard belonging to one of Vamizi s owners The cuisine at Vamizi Island has an emphasis on fresh seafood including lobster prawns calamari crab and assorted fish

Activities Facilities

Marine activities include world-class blue water fishing and fly fishing as well as scuba diving and snorkeling in some of the most pristine coral reefs of the Indian Ocean For the more active Vamizi offers big game fishing salt-water fly-fishing mountain bike trails birdwalks dhow cruises and private picnics

The diving and snorkelling are out of this world Already 350 species of reef fish and 30 different genera of coral have been recorded The waters are crystal clear and the reef untouched by the ravages of man

There are more than 10 dive sites available Most are only 10 or 15 minutes from Vamizi by boat There is a fully equipped dive centre and certified diving courses are available for the inexperienced For the experienced there is a wall dive which drops from 15 to 190 metres

Other activities include whale watching excursions boat trips and beach picnics

All furniture in the rooms the dining room and the central lounge bar area has been chosen designed and mostly custom-made incorporating traditional carvings reflecting the Arabic influence in the area The outside decks and private beaches have a selection of loungers swinging beds and local Swahili day beds to chose from
